Tourists, visitors and residents throng big Buddha statue in Thailand's Phuket Island on Vesak Day
In Thailand, the festival Vesak Day or Visakha Puja is celebrated with religious devotion and gaiety to mark of the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha, all said to have taken place at full moon in the Visakha month of the year. Special prayers and temple ceremonies take place on this day.

Tourists, visitors and residents throng Big Buddha statue in Thailand's Phuket Island on Vesak Day as well as attend sermons on this day focusing on the life of the Buddha on May 19 this year.

On Vesak Day, my kin, now visiting Thailand were at Phuket's Big Buddha which  is one of the most important and revered landmarks on the island.

The huge 45-metre tall image, Phutta Ming Mongkol Akenakiri, sits on top of the Nakkerd Hills. It can be seen from as far away as Phuket Town and Karon Beach.

From here the all round view of the island can be seen and the place is reachable via a winding 6-km road. It is the third-tallest statue in Thailand behind only the Great Buddha of Thailand and Luangpho Yai. The Buddha statue depicts Gautama in a sitting position and its official name is Phra Phutta Ming Mongkol Akenakakiri.

The statue is made of concrete and covered white marble, has been recognized as the Buddhist Treasure of Phuket.
