Science teaching enrichment workshop held at Karnal in Haryana
A science teaching workshop on 'Science of Teaching Science' was organised in Karnal of Haryana on November 18 by Seagull Learning with an objective to to enrich science instruction at middle school level.

The workshop emphasised the cognitive development of students through process-based learning and development of higher order thinking skills like understanding, analysis, application and evaluation.

According to the workshop organizers, the optimum use of textbooks was required by emphasizing the read-to-learn skills and vocabulary building. The use of word puzzles and creating a text-rich classroom was emphasized. Also linking of textbooks to information processing skills and reorganisation of information in graphics was also stressed.

Moreover, hands-on experiences given such as doing experiments, activities and explorations which are the important aspects of science instruction to gain insights into processes of science. Accordingly, during these workshops, low-cost science experiments with straws were demonstrated and teachers are given the first hand experience in creating the activity sheets. It was brought into focus the non-standard measurements and qualitative observations were required at middle school level science.

The teachers' and schools' roles as facilitators and supporters of innate learning potentials of children were brought to centre-stage. It was stressed that the schools are meant for children not the vice-versa and they must go for multiple intelligences model of classroom teaching to accommodate diverse children in the process of learning.

The teachers made the words-pocket charts to create the text-rich classroom environment to reinforce new terms and vocabulary along with cognitive development activities centred around the pocket charts.

The feedback from the participants revealed that the one-day workshop helped them to gain new insights in making science teaching effective and they articulated that the workshop was lively and hardly any dull moment was felt during
