'Nothing but lies and deceit' - Trump while lashing out at Pakistan in his first tweet of the new year
In his first tweet of the new year, US President Donald J Trump slammed Pakistan, accusing the Islamic nation of 'lies and deceit'.

Trump wrote in his tweet that the United States had been foolish in providing Pakistan over $33 billion worth of aid in the last 15 years for which it had got nothing in return.

Launching a scathing attack at Pakistan, Trump wrote that Pakistan was providing "safe haven to terrorists we continue to hunt in Afghanistan."

Trump's first New Year's Day tweet comes in the aftermath of worsening ties between Washington and Islamabad since last summer, after the US President had announced his government's national security strategy for Afghanistan.

The United States in also toying with the idea of withholding $255 million in aid that it had delayed providing to Islamabad in August, last year, as reported by The New York Times.

According to The New York Times, the move is being considered as a backlash for Pakistan's perceived failure to crack down more effectively on terror groups.

However, a defiant Pakistan has reacted angrily over the tweet, saying that all funding had been accounted for and also that Trump was bitter due to the "US defeat in Afghanistan".

"We will respond to President Trump's tweet shortly inshallah...Will let the world know the truth...difference between facts & fiction..." tweeted Pakistan's foreign minister Khawaja Asif, just minutes after Trump's tweet.

The Express Tribune reported that Pakistan's foreign office summoned US envoy to Islamabad David Hale at 9 pm Pakistan time on Monday to officially lodge protest against Donald Trump's tweet accusing Pakistan of 'lies and deceit'.

In the meanwhile, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has today summoned a meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) to discuss what further action needs to be taken following the US President's tweet.
