Nikhil Krishna aka Nikk Freestyler sure knows how to bend it like Beckham!
Freestyle football, also known as freestyle soccer in North America is a relatively unexplored sport in our country. The sport involves a footballer self-expressing himself with a football while performing various tricks with any part of his body.

Although, freestyle football has now become a popular sport around the world, it hardly has any takers in India at the moment. In fact, the sport even has its own governing body known as the Freestyle Football Federation.

Delhi based-boy Nikhil Krishna, popularly known as Nikk Freestyler comes across as a prodigy and exponent of this unique sport.

With his roots in the southern Indian state of Kerala, Nikk was born and brought up in Delhi. He did his schooling from Tagore Public School, Naraina in New Delhi and later attended DU's Dyal Singh College to pursue a degree in BA English honours.

Nikk had great love for football and started playing the game while still in the 6th grade and soon also started developing freestyle footballing skills. With passage of time, Nikk's love for football subsided and he was possessed by the fever of freestyle football. Eventually, Nikk gave up playing football and decided to take his freestyle football skills to the next level.

For motivational purposes, Nikk began by watching videos of football legends Ronaldinho and Christiano Ronaldo which helped him sharpen his skills. The best part about freestyle football is that one does not require much space for practice and a small space is more than enough. Moreover, unlike football, a number of players are not required to practice and the player can either practice freestyle football alone or in a group.

Although, it's true that football and freestyling are not as popular as cricket in India, but with the emerging of leagues like the India Super League (ISL), football is gradually spreading its roots in the country.

To spread the popularity of freestyle football, Nikk along with his fellow partner Ankit Yadav also takes workshops in school with the idea of raising awareness of the youth towards the game.

However, at the same time, Nikk feels that there are many hurdles in the way before freestyling can be turned into a professional sport. According to him, there is lack of funding, media attention and general apathy towards the sport which results in financial insecurity of the sportsperson who wants to pursue the sport.

But, Nikk, mindless of these hurdles wants to represent India one day in world championships. He also plans to start a big academy for teaching the art of freestyle football.

Nikk has appeared in an ad for Delhi Dynamos (ISL Delhi team) as a football freestyler. In another ad of Freecharge, he had appeared along side football legends Alessandro Del Piero, Hans Mulder and Bruno Herrero Arias.

Let's hope that Nikk Freestyler keep bending it like Beckham while also entertaining people with his freestyling.
