Holi is celebration of harmony in society: President Kovind
On the occasion of one of most widely celebrated festival Holi marked with playing with colours and pranks, President Ram Nath Kovind has greeted people and wished them Happy Holi.

In his message for Holi, he said, "On the auspicious occasion of Holi, I extend my greetings and good wishes to all fellow citizens. The festival of colours, Holi is a celebration of harmony in our society. It conveys a message of unity, goodwill and fraternity."

"I am confident this cherished day will inspire all Indians, at home and abroad, to strengthen their bonds of friendship - and fill their lives with happiness and optimism. On the occasion of Holi, let us resolve to work together to accomplish a bright future for our nation," he wished.

In India, Holi is the most celebrated festival after Diwali that is seen as the festival of colours or the festival of harmony. It is an ancient Hindu religious festival that is observed in India, Nepal, and many parts of the world with significant populations of Hindus or people of Indian origin.

Two-day Holi celebrations start with a Holika Dahan - lighting of bonfire - on the night before Holi and the next morning it becomes a free-for-all carnival of colours. But over the years, Holi has become celebration of senseless fun, frolic and colours throwing.

However, the real message of Holi which is associated with Holika Dahan has got lost. The spiritual under-pinning of Holi is conveyed by my following haiku.

  • Burn carnal desires / arising from baser instincts / to keep soul alive.
  • Burn to ashes lust, / since it creates flames of anger / to make you soulless.
  • Burn off your evils. / Goodness will come up alive. / It's self-existent.
