Fall in number of MLAs with criminal background in Gujarat Assembly election-2017
The number of MLAs, who declared criminal cases pending against them considerably fell in Gujarat in the recently concluded Assembly elections.

According to analysis conducted by Gujarat Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) with the self-sworn affidavits of all 182 newly elected MLAs, as many as 47 (26 per cent) MLAs declared criminal cases pending against them.

In 2012 Gujarat Assembly elections, the number of such MLAs was 24 (31 per cent). However, the number of MLAs declaring criminal cases had increased to 33(18 per cent) in 2012, as against the previous figure of 24 (13 per cent). The cases were related to murder, attempt to murder, dacoity, robbery etc.

This time two MLAs namely Maheshbhai Chottubhai Vasava (Bhartiya Tribal Party-BTP) and Katara Bhaveshbhai Babubhai (INC) declared cases related to murder (IPC section 302) pending against them. While six MLAs declared cases related to attempt to murder (IPC Section 307), 1 MLA namely Ahir (Bharwad) Jethabhai Ghelabhai (BJP) from Shehra constituency declared a case related to rape (IPC Section 376) pending in his name.

Party-wise, 18 (18 per cent) out of 99 MLAs from BJP, 25 (32 per cent) out of 77 MLAs from INC, 1 (50 per cent) out of 2 MLAs from BTP, 1 (100 per cent) MLA from NCP and 2 (67 per cent) out of 3 independent MLAs declared criminal cases pending against them in their affidavits.

With regards to serious criminal cases, 12 (12 per cent) out of 99 MLAs from the BJP, 17 (22 per cent) out of 77 MLAs from the INC, 1 (50 per cent) out of 2 MLAs from BTP, 1(100 per cent) MLA from NCP and 2(67 per cent) out of 3 independent MLAs declared serious criminal cases pending against them in their respective affidavits.

Out of the 182 newly elected MLAs, 141 (77 per cent) are millionaires. Out of the 182 MLAs analysed during the 2012 Gujarat Assembly elections, 134 (74 per cent) MLAs were millionaires. Party wise, 84 (85 per cent) out of 99 MLAs from BJP, 54 (70 per cent) out of 77 MLAs from INC, 2 (100 per cent) MLAs from BTP and 1(100 per cent) MLAs from NCP declared assets valued more than Rs 1 crore. The average assets per MLA in the Gujarat 2017 Assembly election stood at Rs 8.46 crore.

In 2012, the average assets per MLAs were valued at Rs 8.03 crore. Party wise, the average assets per MLA for 99 BJP MLAs were Rs 10.64 crore, for 77 INC MLAs Rs 5.85 crore, 2 BTP MLAs Rs 2.71 crores and for 3 independent MLAs the average stood at Rs 53.86 lakh.
