Pro Wrestling League
Bout between Sakshi Malik and Geeta Phogat will be the highlight of Pro Wrestling League Season 2
Although PWL Season 2 has lost much of its sheen due to the absence of star male wrestlers like Sushil Kumar, Narsingh Yadav and Yogeshwar Dutt, the key focus of the tournament would be female wrestlers including the Phogat sisters – Geeta, Babita and Ritu – and Rio Olympics bronze medalist Sakshi Malik.
The 18-day long PWL Season 2 kicks off at the KD Jadhav Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on Monday, January 2. Six franchises – UP Dangal, Haryana Hammers, NCR Punjab Royals, Jaipur Ninjas, Mumbai Maharathi and Delhi Sultans will battle it out to win the tournament final on January 19.

However, all eyes would be on the mother of all battles, the bout between Sakshi Malik and Geeta Phogat. Both adversaries are more than likely to be under tremendous pressure for this match. While Sakshi would be anxious to live up to her reputation after winning a bronze at the Rio Olympics, Geeta is making a comeback after a long layoff due to injury.

Recently, the Aamir Khan-starrer biopic – Dangal – made on the real life struggles of the Phogat sisters and their father has invoked even more interest in this match. While Sakhi is representing Delhi Sultans in the event, Geeta and Babita Phogat are members of the UP Dangal team. In their last encounter against each other, Geeta had convincingly beaten Sakshi.

Besides Sakshi, the Delhi franchise also boasts of Ukrainian Mariya Stadnik (women's 48 kg category), who had won a bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and followed it up by winning a silver each at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. The formidable Delhi side also includes Uzbekistan's Bekzod Abdurakhmonov (men's 70 kg), who had finished at the fifth position at Rio Olympics.

The event will open with a match between Mumbai and Haryana. It would be an interesting encounter as Mumbai had beaten Haryana twice in the last season. The defending champions had first beaten Haryana 4-3 in the league stage and later with a comprehensive 7-2 win to clinch the final.

Another highlight of PWL 2 is the inclusion of the third Phogat sister – Ritu Phogat. The 22-year-old will lead the Jaipur Ninjas in Season 2. Ritu is also the highest paid sportsperson in the league, as the Jaipur franchise shelled out Rs 36 lakh to acquire her services in the PWL auction last month. She had won a silver at the Junior World Championships in 2014. Ritu, who's the youngest of the Phogat sisters, is playing in the PWL to prepare for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
